Where Happily Ever After Begins… | The Venue

Sun beams sparkle through skylights. The beautifully worn wood floors contrasted with the red brick walls recall a certain warmth that is only matched by the abundant light that breaks through incredible industrial windows. Is this a movie set or a wedding venue? Thats the feeling you will be having as you walk down the aisle at your wedding inside the beautiful converted factory known simply as The Venue.

Located in The Bakery Building in Historic Downtown Hattiesburg’s Depot District, The Venue displays raw industrial character with distinct Southern charm. It contains over 7,000 sq ft of reclaimed details such as lots of natural light, original brick walls, and warm caramel hardwood floors juxtaposed with cool exposed steel trusses, to offer those who enter here a sense of the old with the new – all with a personality and panache that could only be accredited to their 1920’s workmanship.
If that wasn’t enough, coming this Winter, The Venue will complete its new beautifully landscaped garden/green space and courtyard. This is just a taste test of the vitality that The Venue has brought to Downtown Hattiesburg. We have the scoop on the inspiring story behind it all!

In 2006, about a year after Hurricane Katrina, the owner Rodney Richardson was searching for a new home for his creative design firm, RARE. Rodney remembers that despite the fact that the hurricane had wreaked havoc on the building, “I ventured into the building and was amazed at what I saw. Yes, there was the utter mess and destruction, but God saw fit to allow me to see beyond the mess.  What I could clearly see was the space that RARE needed, but I also saw the potential for shops, bistros, galleries, and even an area for an event space.” Rodney ended up buying the building and the rest is history.

The event space, known as The Venue, is the crowning jewel of The Bakery Building’s comeback crown. Not only is it a magnificently designed area, but it perfectly fulfills the vision that Richardson has for the entire building as a place where all aspects of life bring people together.  He doesn’t just want his business to simply exist in the community- but to contribute and, as he would say, reverberate. And with The Venue, which literally means “the place where something happens,” he wanted to “create a space where all of life happens – where people can celebrate, congregate, and experience life – and some of life’s big moments – together.”

Our space provides a canvas for them to paint their own picture to tell their unique story. Although the structure remains the same, each wedding and event transforms our space into a storybook setting that is unique to only them. This sort of experience is hard to find, attracting those with an eclectic flair as well as the bride with the most elegant style.

Flexibility and customization are paramount. From historically hip to elegantly cool, we want each bride to feel the freedom to imagine and craft their perfect event. This concept was definitely on our mind when we were designing the space. It needed to be a spot where people from all sorts of backgrounds could feel comfortable and also have a vessel to impart their creativity and unique flair.

The day would definitely include lots of family and friends. I would suggest starting the day with Blush Salon for hair and makeup. They do an incredible job and are located so near to the space, it’s almost too good to be true.
The perfect wedding day would mean very little stress, and in that case I would recommend Adrienne at Blooms for coordination. She is very cool under pressure and can somehow make the most stressful of situations, calm and easy. She has an eye for design, and can also help with wedding party rehearsing and making sure everything goes according to plan.

Our new bridal room and the groom’s loft are great places for the wedding party to have a few moments together to finish getting ready, cut up a little bit, or even have a sacred time of prayer before the ceremony would begin.

Now that we have our new outdoor area, it would be a fabulous area to have an outdoor wedding and then have the guests come inside the building for the reception. Sparklers and antique cars are a great way to create the picture perfect exit, leaving guests amazed at the celebration they have just experienced.

Most importantly, our hope is that The Venue allows each bride to BE HERSELF, so that when the night is over she feels that it was exactly the day she had always dreamed of.

We love how our preferred vendors truly “get” the overall brand of The Venue at The Bakery Building and know how to showcase the space in a way that honors the heritage of this place. For instance, Blooms Hattiesburg chooses flowers and decorations that capture the identity and vision of the bride and groom, without losing the personality and character of the building. That is the edge that vendors who are more familiar with The Venue can offer, they sort of “get” what we are all about.

Photographers have also done an amazing job of capturing the quirks and unique nooks and crannies that most people might glance over. I love how y’all have incorporated the couples’ pets to help make their wedding day pictures even more special. These are the kinds of details that capture what The Venue is all about, experiencing life together.

Our hope is that each and every couple that comes through our doors feels cared for and that their day is exactly what they want it to be. There’s no such thing as perfect, but there is such a thing as caring and doing everything we can to help make that day be as close to perfect as possible. Vendors that communicate and appreciate each other, a clean and comfortable space where people can celebrate together, and two people who not only want to have a special wedding day, but want to have a great life together… these are the things that make for a great experience all the way around.
