Where Happily Ever After Begins… | The Gables

The only sound you hear as you await the opening of the doors is the pounding of your heart. Then the clicking of your shoes as you march toward your loved one. The crescendo of a string quartet swells around you as the attendees rise in unison. Your groom is situated between two beautifully decorated staircases and the dream is finally a reality. This sequence builds up to that magic moment, but it all starts with a venue and your vision.

Laura Matthews and her husband Harlon envisioned a grand venue to house incredible weddings. The result: A mammoth 2-story event venue that features a 7,000+ sq-ft grand ballroom as its focal point. Matthews, who own and continues to run local catering company Laura’s Linens, knew what to offer when it came to housing weddings and other functions. The venue not only houses the ballroom, but also features a beautifully lit atrium, breathtaking courtyard, and some of the most well thought out dressing rooms in the area. We take a closer look at what makes The Gables so unique in this edition of “Where Happily Ever After Begins”

This is one of my favorite questions. The Gables is really a dream come true after spending 10 years in the events and catering business. It was our hope to have a place of our own that would allow for beautiful memories for weddings, parties and all the in between. Our vision was to have a place that was timeless and unique. A place where when you walk in it would be both breathtaking and welcoming. My husband, Harlon, and I designed every part of it ourselves and its fashioned exactly as we hoped.

There are so many features to the Gables that our couples have loved so far. One of the most popular aspects is the Bride and Grooms rooms which are expansive suites suited just for each side of the Bridal Party. The grooms room has a 65 inch TV, Xbox, ping pong table, and vintage lockers recovered from Laurel’s very own Airport Bowling Lanes. The Bride’s Room is adorned with 10 lighted vanities, sitting area, and gorgeous hooks for their dresses as well as a beautiful photo opportunity in the cove with a floor length mirror and chandelier.
Aesthetically, couples have loved the rich heritage and design features such as the beautiful reclaimed wood from a Mississippi Cotton Gin in the Delta, the double Iron Staircase accenting the beautiful entry into the Ballroom, and the lighted courtyard overlooking a pond framed by pine trees.

My heart for this project was that every bride would be able to envision their perfect wedding day. At The Gables, we are all about the bride and her vision and style. Our main goal was to build a place that a bride could walk in, whether they wanted formal or casual, blush or blue, and immediately see that The Gables could adapt to all styles.

Its my wedding day. A day I have dreamed about for years and years. The day I get to marry the man of my dreams. Its 9:00 am in the morning and I’m headed to the Gables. I arrive greeted by Laura and Alise. They escort me to the Bride’s room which is beautifully set up with a brunch for my bridal party complete with muffins, fruit, chicken salad and beverages (clear of course… no stains on my beautiful dress!) My hair stylist is already there with her station set up at the lighted vanity ready to style our hair and apply our make up for the perfect day. I sneak over to check out the Groom’s room before the guys arrive and I find the perfect escape to calm the nerves of my future husband and for a little fun as they wait so patiently on the time to arrive. Fast forward, we have enjoyed brunch and preparing for pictures and it’s time to take our places on the twin curved iron stair cases for the perfect wedding party photographs. After pictures are over, we all go back to our suites awaiting the precious time. Its time, my Dad has arrived and its one last picture and we are sneaking down the hidden stairwell from the Brides room to get to the foyer for my grand entrance. I hear the music playing through the speakers and the doors open. I’m overwhelmed as I gaze upon a room filled with Chiavari chairs perfectly aligned framing a beautiful wooden arbor adorned with my favorite flowers. I walk down the aisle to the man of my dreams and exchange vows in front of 350 guests. The ceremony is complete and the doors open for the guests to adjourn to the courtyard lit by a canopy of lights for hors d’oeuvres and cocktails as the team at The Gables transforms the intimate ceremony into a celebration ready for dancing and lots of fun. I walk into the Ballroom to get the first peek and its perfect. Tables placed around the dance floor with high and low floral arrangements, and table cloths in my wedding color. The food is blessed and the doors are open to the Atrium where a rich buffet of various foods specific to our tastes are presented in the most lovely way. The night is spent celebrating love and life. I don’t want it to end, but it’s time for the send off. The guests line up under the extravagant portico with sparklers ready to send us off! As we leave, we are given the best parting gift. A basket full of all the foods that Laura prepared for us and two slices of the wedding cake for a sweet ending to a perfect wedding at the most memorable and welcoming place. The Gables.

The Gables is a place that is beautiful on its own, but we have been in awe of how it has been transformed by florists, events stagers, and lighting alike. All of the vendors have done a beautiful job of making a beautiful venue extravagant and awe-inspiring.

Our hope is that like our dreams have come true by building the Gables, their dreams for their wedding and the start of their lives together also come true. Our hope is that when the couples think back on their wedding day that they remember the beautiful venue but MOST importantly they remember the love, joy, and celebration that starting a life together brought to them and all their guests that sweet day.
