“All it takes is a little push…” – The Villain Photo-series

“All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That’s how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day. You had a bad day once. Am I right? I know I am. I can tell. You had a bad day and everything changed.”— The Joker

Hello everyone, Ryan here!

Over the past couple of months I’ve been working on a editorial series based on famous villains. My aim was to explore the thin line between decent everyday people and those we consider crazy, dangerous and nightmarish…

I decided to go against a more costume-y style in favor of a more realistic version of the iconic bad guys. An orgin story if you will. A vignette into those moments right before they fell into darkness. As I researched, the fact that so many of these villains had so many real-life issues really struck a chord with me. There is failure, heartache, hate, angst, and (maybe most importantly) mental illness.

On the visual side, I was very inspired by some 1930s Australian prison photos. The inmates in the photos were almost sensationalized by the way the were posed — Stoic even.. And it’s beatiful. The sharpness and starkness of the subjects are just entoxicating and I hope I brought some of that same feeling to these photos.

Let me finish by saying what a joy it was working with my models. These guys were spectacular…. Wether it was help compiling wardrobes, dealing with me pouring milk and smearing makeup on them, or insanely perfect method acting (I’m still absolutely blown away by Corbin McDavitt and his pitch-perfect Jack Torrance. You would have made Mr. Nicholson proud bro…) these guys absolutely were perfect for the task. Let me tell you, its not easy telling someone they look like a crazy person — please come dress up and pose like a lunatic at my house, but I got nothing but 110% from the fellas.

I so enjoyed this project as a little creative outlet and an undertaking that I somewhat dreamed up by myself. Of course, Jess was there with suggestions and it would have never been quite this good without her touch, so Thank you Jessica! And who knows this may not be the end! If you guys have any suggestions or ideas I’d love to hear it. Maybe we can do a second series. I already have a few ideas so we’ll see what happens!

Here are the shots from my five villains: Jack Torrance from Stephen King’s The Shining, Bill the Butcher from Gangs of New York, Tom Riddle from the Harry Potter series, Alex Delarge from A Clockwork Orange, and finally The Joker from the Batman Universe.
